Primer reading review

I found this chapter very thought provoking. The psychology around colour is something that I’d never properly considered before but now I feel is something that could alter the way I think about producing my work.

The section surrounding gender and colour exposes the ‘visual stereotypes’ that creates am ‘artificial view of gender’. I believe this is a very prominent topic currently as people are starting to raise their children as gender neutral instead of forcing these stereotypes on them. It shows the power of colour and how it can influence your perception of yourself and force you into the gender your ‘supposed to be’. These subconscious biases can trigger issues such as toxic masculinity and patronisation of females through advertising and commercialism. I find this topic fascinating and think it would be an extremely interesting starting point to my next project.

Another section that stood out to me was the colour psychology. Through culture and socialisation everyone associates different connotations to different colours. This is very prominent in advertising and marketing as they use colour and design connotations to sell a product. For example, genres of movies have extremely similar colour schemes and designs, such as romcoms or teen high school movies. This is to spark the schemas in your brain through associating movies together to make you think you’ll enjoy it.

One colour I was particularly interested in with white. In religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism white is seen as ‘purity, chastity, virginity and peace’. I think this ideology is still prominent in western cultures as the bride still wears white on their wedding which traditionally showed they have ‘saved themselves for marriage’. This contrast feminist ideas by suggesting a women should save their bodies for the pleasure of men showing the outdated view that a woman is a man’s property. This could be a very interesting start to my next project as it takes the simple idea of the white wedding dress and uses colour to expose its much darker meaning and question why it’s still a tradition in the westernised culture.
