my notes from Coates interview about the director Steven

documenting efforts to get out the flat ad do something simple like go to the shop and the difficulties he finds in it. after this film he felt a new appreciation for his surroundings and the freedom he has on controlling his feelings and how lucky he is to have a stable reality. however on the contrary how his reality is something he has made up to feel comfortable in his surroundings and that if somehow he starts to feel stressed it could all come crashing down. he says that he feels very exposed yet very isolated as nouns there for you but they are exposed. almost like being naked infant of many people and no-one can comfort them. he felt his privacy was being obstructed when his thoughts wearer being known and read and he doesn't understand how Stevan can comprehend that level of invasion in every day life. the film was in two movements- first part was him trying to understand what the narrative was and what the film intailed and how hi surrounding reacted with it and the second part was hum doing deeper into it and attempting to relate to It. he describes it as strange. being in a totally irrational world and once you put yourself in there shoes you can try to understand it and why they have this irrational reality as everything is explained and justified. he says Steven almost got frustrated with him as he couldn't understand the justification of events in this world of irrational fears where you are so far isolated to the point where others are aware of your isolation and the fact you live in a different narrative. he caught onto the fact that the storys that are there to explain the world are a way to try and understand and make sense of the feelings Steven was having towards the omnipresent threat that he felt from all around With no place of safety. when he was being restrained and being told to get out the front door he realised the severity of the situation and how real it is that everything you trust is going and nothing you can be certain about. It felt incredibly undermining. he says he couldn't establish which the passers by were a threat and weren't a threat which he explains as exhausting as he is constantly doubting himself and everyone around him. there was a relief being in the room as they had more of a certainty being in the room as there are less threats. Steven directed him to 'act naturally' which was a way to show the misconception of how your perceived and whats actually going on in the brain. the fact that there's no ending shows that there's no ending to the world Steven lived in as he survived in it for 13 years of his life. Morris only was in the reality for 24 hours. Steven said you can't trust anyone, everyone is in on it, you can't talk to your mum, everyone is a threat therefore there is no 'happy ending'.
